Everything You Need to Know About Plunge Bras

A plunge bra should fit a bigger bust with the underwire sitting flat around each breast, the low centre lying against your chest, smooth cup edges and a level band. Your boobs should stay inside the cups as you move. Spilling can mean you need more cup room or a different shape.

What is a plunge bra?

A plunge bra features a deep V-shaped centre front and angled cups, creating a lower neckline than a bra with a taller middle. That makes it useful under V-neck tops, wrap dresses and low-cut outfits.

If you’re choosing a plunge bra for a large bust, look beyond how low the front goes. The cups still need to contain your breasts comfortably, and the band needs to feel secure.

A nice plunge to it? Lovely. A fit that lets you forget about your bra? Even better.

What is the best plunge bra for a bigger bust?

The best plunge is the one that suits your shape, gives you the support you want and stays comfortable when you move.

Look for underwired cups that sit around your breasts, a low middle that lies flat and a cup edge that doesn’t cut in. Non-padded or lightly lined cups can suit you if you prefer a natural shape; padded cups are an option when you want a more shaped look.

How should a plunge bra fit?

Check the band, wires, middle and cup edges, then move around. A bra needs to work on your body, not just look good while you’re standing still.

At Tutti, we assess fit by eye in the fitting room, looking at how the bra sits on your shape and listening to how it feels.

• The underwire sits flat around each breast. It should follow the breast root, including at the sides, without resting on breast tissue or digging in.
• The low centre lies flat. The middle between the cups should sit against your chest rather than floating away.
• The cups look smooth. Your breasts should sit inside them without spilling over the top or towards the middle. Look for gaping, too.
• The band stays level. It should feel secure around your body without riding up at the back.
• The straps feel comfortable. They help position the cups, but shouldn’t need to be pulled painfully tight to hold everything up.

Once you’ve settled your breasts into the cups, raise your arms, sit down and lean forward. Notice whether the bra stays put and whether you still feel contained.

Why am I spilling out of my plunge bra?

Spilling over the top or towards the middle can mean the cups are too small. It can also mean that particular plunge shape doesn’t suit your breasts.

If the band feels secure but the cup edge cuts in, try more room in the cup. Going up in the band alone can leave you with less support without solving the cup fit.

If you still spill towards the centre after adjusting the size, a different cup shape or more central coverage may feel better. You don’t need to make your boobs work around the bra.

Which plunge works under a V-neck or a low-cut dress?

Choose a plunge whose centre and cup edges sit below your outfit’s neckline. A low middle helps, but the width and shape of the dress opening matter too.

Padded or non-padded: which plunge suits a fuller bust?

Both can work for a fuller bust. Padding changes the shape and finish; it doesn’t decide whether a bra fits or supports you well.

Padded cups can add shape and lift, while non-padded cups follow your natural shape more closely. Harlow and Ramona both offer firm support, despite their different cup construction.

Is a plunge bra a good choice if your bust is heavier or sits lower?

It can be. An underwired plunge with firm support can lift your bust and bring it towards the centre, provided the cups contain your breasts comfortably.

Curvy bodies and breast shapes vary, so the result will look different on everyone. There’s no shape you need to “fix”, just a fit and finish that feel good to you.

Will a plunge bra stay put on a night out?

A well-fitting plunge should feel secure as you move. Try it with your outfit and have a walk, sit down and raise your arms before heading out. Repeatedly tucking yourself back in is a reason to reassess the fit.

Should I size up in a plunge?

Not automatically. Start with your usual size, then assess the band and cups separately.
