How to care for your bra.

by Jessica Prebble 02 Aug 2024 0 Comments

Proper care for your bras can significantly extend their lifespan and maintain their comfort and support. Here are some tips for washing, drying, storing, and general maintenance:

Washing Your Bras

  1. Hand Washing:

    • Step 1: Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of gentle detergent, preferably one designed for delicates.
    • Step 2: Submerge the bras and gently agitate the water with your hands to distribute the detergent.
    • Step 3: Let the bras soak for about 10-15 minutes.
    • Step 4: Gently rub the fabric together to remove dirt and oils, especially in the band and cup areas.
    • Step 5: Rinse thoroughly with clean, lukewarm water until all detergent is removed.
  2. Machine Washing:

    • Step 1: Place bras in a mesh lingerie bag to protect them from tangling and damage.
    • Step 2: Use a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent.
    • Step 3: Avoid washing bras with heavy items like jeans or towels that can cause abrasion.

Drying Your Bras

  • Air Dry: Always air dry your bras. Lay them flat on a towel or hang them by the center gore (the piece between the cups) or the band, not by the straps, to avoid stretching.
  • Avoid Heat: Never use a dryer, as heat can damage the elastic and fabric.

Storing Your Bras

  1. Flat Storage: Store bras flat in a drawer with the cups nested inside each other to maintain their shape.
  2. Hanging Storage: Hang bras by the centre gore or the band, not the straps, this prevents stretching.
  3. Avoid Crushing: Do not crush or fold the cups, especially for moulded or padded bras, as this can deform them.

General Maintenance Tips

  1. Rotate Your Bras: Avoid wearing the same bra two days in a row. This allows the elastic to recover and reduces wear and tear.
  2. Adjust Straps Regularly: Check and adjust the straps regularly to ensure they are providing the right amount of support without digging into your shoulders.
  3. Check Fit Periodically: Your body can change over time, so it’s important to regularly check the fit of your bras and replace them if they no longer provide the necessary support.
  4. Replace When Needed: Be aware of signs of wear, such as stretched bands, broken underwires, or frayed fabric. Replace bras when they no longer fit properly or provide adequate support.

Additional Tips

  • Use Gentle Detergents: Harsh detergents can break down the fabric and elastic. Use a detergent specifically formulated for delicate fabrics.
  • Avoid Fabric Softeners: Fabric softeners can leave a residue that breaks down elastic fibres.
  • Spot Clean Between Washes: If you need to freshen up your bra between washes, you can spot clean areas like the band and underarms with a damp cloth and a small amount of detergent.

By following these care tips, you can ensure that your bras remain in good condition, providing the support and comfort you need for a longer period.
